Billions experiencing extreme heat in June 2024 while scientists remain astonished

According to Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), May marked the 12th consecutive month breaking historic global temperature records. In other words, breaking historic monthly heat records.


"May 2024 was the warmest May on record, marking the 12th consecutive month in which the global average temperature reached a record value for the corresponding month, according to data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (*C3S)."


The graph clearly shows the exceptional temperatures:


We are confronted with a high chance that between 2024 and 2028 the global average temperature will temporarily exceed 1.5°C, and almost a 50% chances the average in the five year period 2024-20248 will exceed 1.5°C above the pre-industrial era.


The aim of limiting the global average temperature rise below 1.5°C is key to reduce the impacts on human systems and terrestrial, freshwater and coastal ecosystems. The threshold would keep us on the safe side of what is called climate chaos through unpredictable feedback loops.



The report by Climate Central said that the blistering heat in June impacted 619 million people in India, 579 million in China, 231 million in Indonesia, 206 million in Nigeria, 176 million in Brazil, 171 million in Bangladesh, 165 million in the US, 152 million in Europe, 123 million in Mexico, 121 million in Ethiopia, and 103 million in Egypt.
"More than 60 per cent of the world population faced extreme heat that was made at least three times more likely by climate change during June 16-24," it said.

According to PBS News, several top scientists state that they are astonished by the record-breaking heat, particulary the the whopping margin of 2023.
